Brake calipers are located at the edge of your brake rotors. They're also attached to different valves and tubes, which conduct the brake fluid that puts pressure on the calipers when you press on the pedals. In actuality, a failed brake caliper is usually caused by neglected brake pads and rotors. These parts would need more maintenance, especially since they typically need to be replaced at around 40,000 miles (or more if your vehicle's manual says so). If neglected, your calipers typically need to be replaced at an as-needed basis.

You'll know that you need to replace your brake calipers when your car turns slightly instead of slowing down, or when there's leakage under where your brake pedals would be. By then, you'll likely spot your brake lights flashing on your dashboard.
